The library has three computers for public Internet access. We take reservations and welcome walk-ins. A half hour of usage is guaranteed, with job-hunters allowed additional time. There is a charge for printouts. Minors must have a signed permission slip on file to access the Internet. Parents or guardians must sign the form in person at the library. Additional computers and a typewriter are available for word processing and access to educational software/games. There is a charge for printouts. Photocopy and fax services are also offered to the public for a fee. There is a scanner and rewriteable CD drive for public use. The library microfilm reader (without printer), a microfiche reader, and a document magnifier are also for the benefit of patrons. The two library meeting rooms are available at no charge for public, non-profit gatherings; there is a fee for profit-making sessions. The rooms comfortably seat fifty people; the newer room has a kitchenette. There is a television and VCR, a projection screen, and an older overhead projector. The complete meeting room policy may be obtained from the library.
Interlibrary Loan
We borrow and lend books, audios, and videos from libraries across the nation on a daily basis; copies of periodical articles can also be obtained. The usual lending period is three to four weeks. We do ask our patrons to pay return postage; $1.35-3.00 depending upon the weight. Payment is due upon receipt of the order. As a rule, we cannot borrow materials that were published within the last six months. Patrons can search library listings themselves, if they wish, at http://montanalibraries.org and actually request loans at the WorldCat connection, once the correct title is found. Interlibrary loan requests can be e-mailed from the web site to our library. (We do not need your actual library card number, if you don't know it.) Local users can call the library for our Powell County password.
Youth
Children's Area The children's section of the library includes picture books, beginning readers, chapter books, and young adult paperbacks. There are cassette tapes, books on CD, videos, and DVDs for all ages. Two computers are set aside for juvenile research and entertainment. The library, of course, encourages attendance at our Summer Reading Program for students in grades K-6th in June and July. School classes and other groups are welcome anytime.
Adult Education Together with other community agencies, the library sponsors adult education classes three times a year. The classes have covered a wide array of subjects, from computer instruction to butchering to needlework to birding. Classes are advertised in the local media. The non-credit classes cost $3.00 per class hour; session length varies from one day to six evenings. Registration takes place at the library or by phone (406) 846-2622.
Literacy Program Co-sponsored by Powell County High School and the library, the Powell County Literacy Program office is located in the new addition, lower level, of the library. This free service provides tutors and guidance for people preparing for the GED exam, learning English as a second language (ESL), or seeking to enhance their job skills. Megan Thompson, program director, can be reached at (406) 846-2242.
Powell County Genealogical Society The Powell County Genealogical Society formed for the purpose of indexing and preserving records of the area. The group meets in the genealogy room, located in the library, on the second Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. Limited research is offered. Anyone interested in joining the society is welcome. Contact: Kohrs Library at (406) 846-2622.
