Books

The library has approximately twenty thousand volumes.  We offer a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books.  There are sections devoted to large print titles, westerns, science fiction/fantasy, and mysteries, as well as general fiction and non-fiction.

The juvenile department also has areas designated for various reading levels and subjects.  Juvenile non-fiction titles are largely interfiled with the adult non-fiction.

Newspapers and other Periodical Resources

The library subscribes to the daily newspapers from Butte, Helena, Missoula, and Great Falls, as well the Deer Lodge weekly and Anaconda bi-weekly.  Out of town papers are kept for approximately one year.  Newspapers are for in-library-use only.

We subscribe to over fifty magazines in our effort to satisfy a broad selection of interests.  Issues may be borrowed for one to three weeks or enjoyed in our reading area.

The library also purchases access to Infotrac, an online periodical database which offers citations and, in many cases, full-text articles for thousands of journals for adults and youths.  Patrons can ask for staff assistance or search the database themselves from the library or their home computers.  Many Infotrac subject and age-based indexes are available at  http://montanalibraries.org; the complete database is at  http://www.infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/mtlib_p_kohrs. Library staff can provide the Powell County password to local area users.

Special Collections

Our Special collections room holds many materials of local interest and numerous Montana history titles.  The holdings include manuscripts, yearbooks, videos, periodicals, and books with a Powell County or Montana connection.  Additionally, we have several shelves of Civil War military records.

There are also many local and state materials on the open shelves.

Videos/ DVDs, Audios/ Books on CD

The library has several hundred audiotapes on cassette and a growing collection of books on CD~ both fiction and non-fiction, adult and juvenile.  They are checked out for three weeks; arrangements can be made for a longer period if needed.

Our videotapes and DVD holdings continue to grow, thanks to many donations.  There are instructional and educational titles, classic and popular feature films, as well as a juvenile section.  The borrowing period is one week, three weeks for instructional materials.

Reference

Our reference books include various encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, medical handbooks, and phonebooks.  Also of note is our collection of auto/truck repair manuals and the current Montana Code Annotated (state laws).  These materials must be used in the library.  We also have electronic encyclopedias.

We subscribe to the Auto Repair Reference Center at http://trial.epnet.com.  This outstanding site can be accessed at the library or at home by library patrons.  Call the library at (406) 846-2622 for the password.
